Foodie Friday: JBF 2012 Book,Journalism and Broadcast Awards

By Debbie Mitchell

This past week was a foodie's dream, filled with parties and events honoring great foods and the Chefs who create these culinary treats.  This year marks the 25th anniversary of  the James Beard Foundation and the first time new media webcast nominees were included in the awards.  Yeah!!

Last Friday, I didn't eat all day to get ready ready for the  2012 James Beard Foundation Awards  . The awards dinner at Manhattan's Gotham Hall where winners for Book, Journalism, Broadcast and New Media Awards were announced, did not disappoint.  Fellow committee members, nominees, judges and James Beard Foundation guests first gathered for a cocktail reception before the ceremony, starting with a punch that had quite a kick!

James Beard Broadcast and New Media Awards Committee Chair Emerald Yeh and her husband Ron Blatman struck a pose.

Committee member Carolyn O'Neil (in black w/purse, third from left) brought her support team for the evening.

I grabbed James Beard Foundation President, Susan Ungaro and  CBS News Correspondent and JBF Winner Martha Teichner, co-host for the night's event, for a quick photo.

The awards  went off without a hitch.  Yes, our dinner was amazing but everyone was waiting for

 the winners who included :
Ted Allen of Food Network's "Chopped" won the Best Media Personality and "Chopped" won Best Television Program

"Modernist Cuisine," won (2) awards,  the Cookbook of the Year and the award for  Cooking from a Professional Point of View. The five volume collection took seven years to complete.

I've never held a James Beard Award medal before so I asked Andrew Zimmern host of  "Bizarre Foods with Andrew Zimmern" and winner in the Television Program, On Location category to hold his medal.  Just so you know, it's heavier than it looks.

Nathalie Dupree, a fellow committee member, has authored eleven cookbooks. Her latest is  "Southern Biscuits", co-authored with Cynthia Graubart.  Nathalie a veteran of the JBF and says this year's awards was one of the best.  Now that the 2012 awards season is behind us, we are looking for next year's nominees. If you want to be nominated or want to nominate a local, national television chef , online food personality or story for a James Beard Broadcast and New Media award let us know. You have a year to get ready, so start cooking!
