For television executives and advertisers this is Broadcast Television's Upfront Week, where broadcast and some cable networks will reveal their 2012-2013 prime time schedules. The week is a chance for networks to roll out the red carpet and spend big bucks on parties, presentations and putting their biggest network stars out to meet and greet the advertisers who will pay for airtime. The Upfront presentations usually take place at an impressive venue, maybe New York's Avery Fisher Hall, Carnegie Hall, or the Beacon theatre.
Here is a sampling of what has gone one so far. On Monday NBC was at Radio City Music Hall and FOX was at the Beacon Theatre with a post-show party at Wollman Rink in Central Park. Yesterday, ESPN and ABC presented their line-up. ABC held their event at Avery Fisher Hall at Lincoln Center and it was hosted by Jimmy Kimmel. Today, CBS, my old stomping ground, will have their event at Carnegie Hall with a reception at the Tent at Lincoln Center. I worked at CBS for a decade, never had the opportunity to attend an Upfront event, but the staff would turn on the television to watch the live feed of the event. It was a chance for us to watch CBS executives and talent try to be funny (some were good at it and others were not) and participate in skits as they revealed the new line-up. For many of us at the office, it was also the first time we were hearing the news about what shows were being launched, canceled and were changing time slots on our network.

With the increase of digital media where viewers can now pick and choose where to find their entertainment, broadcast and cable networks are under more pressure to keep advertisers interested. If a show debuts to less than stellar ratings and viewers don't tune in, networks don't have the luxury of keeping shows on the air to find an audience. They have got to go.
While reading through industry stories this week I came across the TVLine breakdown of cancelled and renewed shows for 2012. It is no surprise that reality programs like The Biggest Loser and The Amazing Race were renewed, since viewers are still tuning in to those show.
