Talk Show Host Anderson Cooper |
By Debbie Mitchell
Last week it was announced that Anderson Cooper's talk show was getting a face lift for its second season. The show will air live daily, get a name change to what else, "Anderson Live"and includes the use of multiple social media platforms to allow his audience to be more a part of the show. So the already busy host, will have a lot more work ahead of him. Anderson Cooper has officially joined a growing list of on-air talent who have been lucky enough to hold multiple television jobs at the same time.
When Anderson Cooper first launched his talk show last year, some critics and viewers questioned how he was going to juggle his three jobs. Yes, three jobs! Not only is Anderson Cooper the host of his own talk show, he also hosts the daily news show "Anderson Cooper 360°" on CNN and is a "60 Minutes" Correspondent over at CBS. So far, Anderson Cooper has been able to do it, but the question my mother asked me over the weekend is "why does one person need so many jobs and does he get paid for each one?" I said , "yes, mommy, I am sure he does get paid for each one." My mom's response "Isn't there someone else who could do the job or who needs a television job, why do they give keep giving the same people shows ?" Gotta love my mom, she keeps it so real.
Anderson Cooper is not the first personality to do double and triple duty hosting shows sometimes on other networks and even crossing over into different genres of television. Back in the day, my old boss Geraldo Rivera also did on-air double duty, splitting time between his talk show and his night time news show on CNBC. When Geraldo the talk show wrapped production in 1998 Geraldo went back to news full time. There was a time when a news personality would never take a chance on having his or her news credentials being questioned. Now news personalities will host talk shows, reality shows and game shows all at the same time. Anderson Cooper is obviously not working for the money and he is not the first or last host to have multiple shows simultaneously. Below are a few others who have or are able to find the time to work one, or two or even three television jobs.
Meredith Vieira co-hosted " The View" then “Today” show while hosting the syndicated daytime version of "Who Wants To Be A Millionaire" |
Rachael Ray hosts syndicated talk & lifestyle program Rachael Ray and 30 Minute Meals, Rachael Ray's Tasty Travels and $40 a Day on Food Network
|
Sherri Shepherd co-hosts "The View" and also hosts GSN's "The Newlywed Game" |
These are names off the top of my head. And since I am writing about working more than one job, I have to give a nod to the 1990's comedy show "In Living Color" which featured the skit with Damon Wayans as head of the hardest working West Indian family, The Hedleys, who believed you could never have too many jobs and always made us laugh with his line "How many jobs do you have mon?"
What do you think, can on-air talent have too many jobs...Do you mind seeing on-air talent hosting multiple shows, especially in different genres? Let me know. Also, if you can think of any other personalities who have worked double duty on television leave a comment.
