My visit to Live With Kelly.....

Live With Kelly set
By Debbie Mitchell
Today, I had a fun filled morning when I had a chance to go back in time to the place where I first discovered my love of television.  WABC-TV is only a few blocks away from where I live on the Upper West Side of Manhattan and it's where I did my internship many, many, many years ago. I was a bright eyed and bushy tailed student and the hot local morning show was The Morning Show with Regis Philbin and Cyndy Garvey.  I was a junior in college and an intern in television!

As an intern,  I use to get to the studio very early ( 7am),  prep the greenroom food for guests, watch the action and show behind the scenes, go to staff meetings, research ideas, make phone calls and try to network with people,  for 3 semester's with hopes of getting a job. Remember interns don't get paid, so it was all for the love of TV and to get a job.  The show staff included producers Judy Jones, Bill Flor,  Delores Spruell, Marla Kell, Dru Gibson, production assistant Michael Gelman and a few more folks who worked out of the small office.   I didn't get the job, but I had fun and met my mentor Dru Gibson.  Dru eventually put me on the right track to my first television job at Essence, The Television Show.

Over two decades later,  a few of the original people are still working on the now syndicated show, including Gelman who has been Executive Producer for the last 23 years and Delores who is a producer. This morning when I walked into the studio, some things were a little different while some things were still the same.  As we all  know, Regis is no longer host and according to Gelman, Regis is great!  The show is re-named  Live With Kelly and Kelly Ripa is holding the fort down with guest hosts like Martin Short  until a permanent co-host is named.

I didn't recognize most of the crew but saw the longtime stage manager Julian.  It was nice to see a woman working the studio camera.

Below the audience is primed and ready to go when the  music begins to play.  Clapping as loud as they can ,at just the right time , is all a part of  the price of admission.  By the way, the tickets are free!!!

Before you know it, you've laughed your way through an hour of live television fun.  But no worries, it's a daily show, you get to do it all over again tomorrow!  Here's my girl, Angie, making sure everybody has a good seat in the house.
