FOODIE FRIDAY: CHOOSE YOUR ONE MEAL TO EAT EVERYDAY

By Debbie Mitchell

Today's post has been on my mind all week and I couldn't wait for Foodie Friday  Last week I had lunch with a girlfriend who I have known for almost 20 years. To protect her identity I will call her "CS".   We met for lunch at a diner and when it was time to order  I noticed that "CS" requested a  dish she had ordered many times before. It was a large salad and drink.  It is very close to the  same thing she ordered the last time we were together. The diner menu had a large selection of dishes and I found it challenging to choose a meal, but I finally decided on a cup of matzo ball soup and a pastrami sandwich.

While we waited for our meal, I asked "CS" about her decision to have a salad again.  "CS" said that she has eaten the same thing for lunch and dinner for the past 15 years. At first I thought she was kidding, but realized she was serious.  I didn't want to believe it.  The truth is I didn't understand it. So we talked about her choice  and "CS" said she likes the way her body feels after the meal and does not like to think about food. By ordering the same meal it is allows her to remain in control of the outcome, specifically when it comes to her weight and how she feels afterward.  "CS" says food is fuel for her body more than anything else.

I was intrigued. All I could think about is the variety of foods that exist. The styles, types and tastes and how much fun it is to try everything, especially on vacation.  I asked "CS" what she eats on vacation. She said a variation of the salad for lunch and her dinner meal which usually has fish.

Wow!! When I am on vacation I eat with the locals of the locals. I enjoy trying the authentic, ingredients and meals of the region.  "CS' asked me about my favorite food, I said pasta. She said too many carbs.  I don't, but probably should spend more time thinking about my carb intake. I think about the food's flavor, texture and how it looks, "CS" couldn't relate.

It was an interesting discussion. After I got home  I received an email from "CS".  She had reflected on our conversation at lunch and wanted me to know that she preferred to be thin than to taste great food.  Being thin made her feel good and she knew foods to eat to stay thin and she was happy with her decision.  I respect and am impressed with "CS'" level of discipline but am left wondering can a foodie have it all (carbs too), enjoy great food, still feel good and stay thin if that is your goal?

Could you eat the same meah every day...if so what meal would it be?

Leave a comment and let me know what you think.

Enjoy your Friday!!

  1. This was a very interesting post. I could probably eat Mexican food every day I love it so much.

If you want to lose weight and love food, you can experiment with adding different flavors/spices/herbs to the same lo cal dish to make it less repetitive without sacrificing variety.
